Domain Name FAQ

Not sure what a domain name is or how it works? This FAQ will help you understand the basics so you can confidently choose the right option for your website.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the web address people type into their browser to visit your website — for example, yourname.com. It’s how people find your site online.

Do I need a domain name to build a website?

Yes. A domain name is required so visitors can access your website. During the Weekend Website Workshop, you can either register a new domain or use one you already own.

What’s the difference between registering a new domain and using an existing one?

Registering a new domain means you’re claiming a brand-new web address that hasn’t been used before.

Using an existing domain means you already have a domain registered elsewhere and want to connect it to your new website.

Can I use a domain I already own?

Yes! If you already have a domain name, you can use it. Just keep in mind that you won’t connect it to your new website until after the workshop is finished. This ensures your current website (if any) stays live and unaffected.

What are nameservers?

Nameservers are part of the domain system that direct visitors to the server where your website is hosted. When your new site is ready to go live, you’ll update your domain’s nameservers to point to your new hosting account.

Do I need to update my nameservers before the workshop?

No. If you’re using an existing domain, do not update your nameservers before the course. We’ll give you the correct nameservers and instructions after the workshop is complete.

What if I want to see my new website before it goes live?

You’ll temporarily update your computer’s “hosts” file. This lets your browser preview your new site without making any public changes. We’ll walk you through this process step by step during the workshop.

Can I transfer my domain to you?

No. At this time, we do not support domain transfers. You can keep your domain at your current registrar and simply update the nameservers when your new site is ready.

How much does a domain cost?

Domain registration usually costs around $10–$15 per year. If you register a domain during workshop signup, the cost will be added during checkout.
